In November of 1999, twelve Colonial Dames volunteers launched the Davidson County Cemetery Survey Project. Since that date hundreds of community volunteers have been involved in visiting cemeteries, photographing tombstones, and recording inscriptions. Hundreds more volunteers have provided local history, family data, cemetery directions, or archaeological assistance.
Categories of cemeteries include family graveyards, benevolent society burial grounds, and churchyards. Some cemeteries have been lost, destroyed, or removed from their original locations.
Copies of the inscriptions, sketches of graveyard layouts, and directions to surveyed cemeteries are in the Metro Archives collection. For cemeteries listed as lost, destroyed, or removed, research reports including the names of those once buried in the Metro Planning Commission, have been pinpointed on county survey maps and thus are better protected from encroachment.
